A Restful Day

Today was totally different from yesterday.

Abby was at school all day.

Isaiah worked on his homeschooling as he was reading the play, the Miracle Worker.

I did some housework, put Isaiah's application together for his high school tennis tryout, called my mom (and got to talk to my sister!!!!!) and emailed people. And I worked on my school prep.

Food was already prepared for these next two days.  The kids' uniforms were washed and ready.

It was restful, but I didn't have time to read. I didn't have time to go for a run.  But I did have time to rest!

What a peaceful day!  What a restful day!

A People Day

Today was filled with talking with an assortment of people about an assortment of situations.

In the morning I met up with a wonderful sister in Christ from Canada who is now living in Neihu. We decided that we would meet next Tuesday morning as well.

Then I had a long conversation with my dear mother.  I need to remember to speak words of blessings over her and not tell her that she is becoming more like her own mother.  My grandmother was not a kind, spirit-filled woman. She complained much and threw tantrums often and always seemed set on having her ways.  I think she brought in a new definition of "ornery".  Ornery is defined as mean-spirited, disagreeable, contrary in disposition.  My mom is not like that!  Now, the word also carries the idea of being stubborn.  I think of my mom as fun loving and easy to get along with. But in her old age and her lack of eye sight and hearing, she is becoming difficult to communicate with.  But I need to pray for God's Holy Spirit to redeem my mom and transform her attitude.

My phone battery ran out by the time I ended the conversation with my mom.  So, a dear sister who now lives in Korea called me via skype.  I tried to encourage her to keep her "house" built upon the solid rock of JESUS as she is going through many situations.

Before I went on a bike ride with Abby, I found out that the hot water heater in our old house needed to be replaced. I called the store but the lady was out to lunch.  Abby and I got ready and I decided to give her one more call and she was there. So, I ordered the hot water heater, called the tenant who is living at the house and arranged for the new hot water heater to be installed tonight.  For our bike ride, we went to the store, paid for the hot water heater, then went and bought milk and fruit.

After we got back, Abby helped me to prepare the fruit and cook a chicken quiche dish as we were expecting another dear sister who was arriving from Scotland.  Just as I put the quiche in the oven, we got her phone call. She was on her way from the airport!  By the time she arrived, the quiche was done. It was a blessed time to talk to her about the truth that GOD IS MORE THAN ABLE.  We prayed together before I dropped her off at the MRT Station.

I picked up my son at the cram school at 10p.m. and called our tenant to ask about the hot water heater. The installation guy came at 7:30 and got it done quickly and they were able to take nice hot showers tonight.

The evening ended with emailing people and doing a load of laundry as my daughter needed her uniform for tomorrow.  I also packed the chicken quiche for her lunch.

Yes, it was a people day... and I am so glad that for each person, God gave me specific verses to speak over the particular circumstance or situation.

A Fun Day

I try to set Monday morning as my "free personal time", but that doesn't always work out. I find that there are things to do, such as housework and school work, errands to run, kids' stuff to prepare... you get the idea. I had already planned to go out to Danhsui as there was an area that needed some touch-up paint.  I wanted to leave at 7:30, but of course, I got caught up in doing housework, emailing people and calling my mom.  By 9:30, even though I wasn't finished with things, I decided to take off.  I wanted to go back to where I was running when I was hit by the downpour and was offered a ride from a total stranger. I found my way there and rode all the way to the bike trail and parked my scooter there. I then ran to Danhsui. The weather was beautiful. On the way to Danhsui, I stopped and talked to the bike shop owner. I do that every time I go for a run to Danhsui. It started once because I needed to refill my water bottle or I wasn't going to make it back.  And ever since then, I made it a point to stop and talk to him. He expects me now.  When I got to the prayer tower, I took a shower, painted the area, and just spent a short time in prayer of thanksgiving.

1 Chronicles 29;11

I took the MRT back and met up with Alan for our afternoon date.  We splurged and went to Burger King!

It was just such a FUN DAY.  I hope to do it again next week, but this time, I will leave earlier!

My Brother Is Here

My brother, James, is here again for a few days.  And tonight, he had time to have dinner with us. At first, it was just going to be us but after church, the kids invited Robert, Ariel and Jane.  I had made reservation at a great Hakka restaurant called the Kitchen.  The food was so great that we didn't even have time to take pictures of each dish as we devoured each dish as soon as it arrived.

But we did take a couple of group pictures at the end of the meal --

A Miracle

Today I decided to go over to the Danhsui house to waterproof paint this one small area. It has to dry overnight and then tomorrow, I will use this waterproof putty over that area before I cover it with the color of the wall which is this beautiful yellow.

At 3:09, I leave Danhsui and start my run back to where I parked my scooter.  I thought it would take about an hour and 10 minutes to get back to the ChiYan Station.  In less than 30 minutes into my run, it started to sprinkle.  And soon, it was a down pour.  Lightning was flashing and I had to take off my iShuffle so that it won't get wet.  At around 4:00 I stopped at this cafe near the bike trail and asked them for direction. I needed to cut through from the bike trail to the main road.  The people there were really nice and gave me clear and correct directions.  I started running down this path and it was really pouring now.  I was totally soaked.  I looked at my watch and it was 4:15 and the way to the main road was becoming a lot longer than I had anticipated. I started praying.  "Father, please help me. I need to get home as we have Couples Only Core at our house today at 5 p.m. I don't think I'm going to get to my scooter until maybe 6p.m. Please, maybe someone on a scooter would stop to give me a ride."

About 5 minutes after this prayer and a few scooters riding past me without stopping, a very fancy and big black car with very dark tinted windows stopped.

The windows came down and a guy asked, "Where are you going? Do you need a ride?"  I told him I needed to get to the MRT station and he said, "Get in. I'll take you there."  I saw that he had running clothes on. That was a good sign! I said that I was completely soaked. He responded, "No problem. Here is a towel."  So, I sat on the towel and we started chatting. He is 72 years old and started running when he was 48. He runs at 4:30 in the morning because the air is better. He used to run lots of marathons but now he just run for fun.  It was a long way to the MRT station. He dropped me off and I run towards where I had parked my scooter. The ride in the downpour was filled with gratitude and prayer. The visibility was very limited and the water was splashing all around.  I got home at 5:15 -- a total miracle.

No one had arrived. I hopped into the shower and got dressed, then dried my hair, got the house ready and the phone rang. The first couple was waiting at the MRT station.  I asked Alan to go and pick them up.  At 5:30, another couple arrived.  By 5:45 everyone came.

THANK YOU GOD.  WHAT A MIRACLE!

We had a great Couples Only Core.  If it wasn't for that man who gave me a ride, I would have never made it back.  That trail from the bike path to the main road was a very long way.  I will go and run it again, but I won't give myself only one hour and 10 minutes. I think it would be about a two and a half hour run.  Maybe I would meet up with that 72 year old gentleman again!

My Funny Daughter

How did you like Isaiah's poem yesterday? Now, it's my daughter's fable --

Without Heeding Good Advice

This story is about a pig (no offence to pigs) and a horse. These two animals lived on the same farm. The farmer bought a new horse and put the horse's home right next to the pig's home. Every day the pig had his routine, which was eat and sleep. That was all he did all day long.
One day, the horse asked the pig if he wanted to go out for a run with him. The pig immediately said, "I do not run!".  The horse replied, hoping to be an encouragement to the pig, "Come on. Running is good for you. Come with me!".  The pig said a second time, wanting to be firm, "I don't run, and I don't like someone trying to break my daily routine."  And this time the pig said it with a very piggy snort. The horse tried again, "Did you know that pigs need to exercise, too?  Come. You'll love it!" The pig got a little tired this time and shouted, "Don't try my patience, Horse!  Pigs are made to eat and sleep. These are the basic nature of all pigs."  The horse looked at the pig with sadness and said to the pig in a clear loud voice, "Exercise will help prevent you from being eaten by people, my dear friend.  Don't say I didn't warn you." So the horse went for a wonderfully long run every day, and the pig just kept eating and sleeping.  Without running, the pig got fatter and fatter. One morning, the horse woke up and saw that the pig's home was empty. He knew what had happened to Pig.

May I just say that this story "came to her" after I had bugged her about going running with me for many days!

My Poetic Son

Both my kids are very talented. Today I will post one of Isaiah's many poems. Tomorrow, I will post one of Abby's fables.

Rain, rain, still more rain,
Turning happiness into pain.
Why do these drops keep falling down?
Turning smiles into frowns.
Maybe it’s God crying from heaven,
As He watches the poor get forsaken.
Has it ever occurred to us,
That maybe the weather reflects our every action?
So don’t complain about the rain,
First think about the souls you might have slain.

Some Things Never Change

Alan and I have been married for 27 years. On our honeymoon, we had our first argument... over what? Over food!

Since then, it is still an area of conflict.  So, my sweet daughter made signs so that I can put on items that I don't want him to eat.  Well, it's not that I don't want him to eat the item; it's just that I don't want him to finish the item without leaving me a bite.  That was the point of our first argument which occurred in Disney World on our honeymoon.

On Tuesday night, I made liver and onions. I love it. Denny's Restaurant used to serve this dish, but I don't find it on the menu anymore. In fact, I don't find liver and onions served in most restaurants. So, I have to make it if I want some.  Back to my story... that evening before putting it away, I asked Alan if he would want any. He said, "No, I don't like liver and onions."  With that answer, I felt "safe" and did not put a note on the container.

This afternoon, I went out for a run.  On the way back, I was thinking, "Oh, I'm going to enjoy my lunch of rice and liver and onions."

I walked into our house and on the counter was an empty container! It was the container with MY liver and onions.  I was in shock!  Did I mention that the container was EMPTY?  I mean completely licked CLEAN!

"Alan, what have you done?  You ate all my liver and onions?????"

He walked out of the computer room and said, "Well... it tasted great with rice."

I should have put a sign on the container. I should have known it wasn't safe!

Some things never change!

The Pageant of Our Lord

My dear friend, Suz, is part of the Rollin Hill Covenant Church's Pageant Of Our Lord production.  She was kind enough to get tickets for my sister and her family.  Annie went and said it was AMAZING.

What is this Pageant?

Here is how it is described on their web site --

Pageant of Our Lord
Over 200,000 people have enjoyed Pageant of Our Lord. Each presentation includes fifteen art pieces, magnificent orchestrations with a 60-voice choir and original narration to lead the audience on a unique journey through Christ’s life. Over 400 volunteers donate hundreds of hours each year to bring this unique gospel presentation to believers and non-believers alike.

You can go on their web site to see how art works are transformed into pieces with real people being staged as "art".

Go to http://pageantofourlord.com

I have always wanted to attend one of these "presentations", but we are never in the States during the time of the Pageant.  I can only look at the still photos and imagine what it would be like.

Here is one picture that is "made" with real people --

Counting Down

There are many events in these next few weeks. Let me list them for you --

This Thursday and Friday will be Isaiah's "midterm exams".

May 1st and 2nd will be his final set of "practice tests".

May 10th will be his tennis tryout.

BUT what we are counting down to is the weekend of his BIG exams -- May 17th and 18th.  We are 27 days from those tests which will decide what high school he will attend.

For Abby, her next set of exams will be May 13th and 14th.  On the afternoon of the 14th, she will be having her 8th grade badminton competition. Last Friday, she went with her class for a volleyball competition and they won third place.

On May 15th she leaves for an overnight wilderness experience trip.  So, she will be away for May 15th and 16th.

The Obedience of John 21:5-6

He has risen!

What joy to know that He is alive!

As I come to the close of the book of John, I see one more glimpse of Jesus through John 21:5-6

So Jesus said to them, "Children, you do not have any fish, do you?" They answered Him, "No." And He said to them, "Cast the net on the right-hand side of the boat and you will find a catch." So they cast, and then they were not able to haul it in because of the great number of fish.

As the disciples obeyed, they caught more than they could have imagined. In fact, the catch was so big that they were not able to haul it in.

So, that's the resurrected power in action.

I need to listen to His instructions. And what He tells me to do, I need to obey.

I worship the Risen Savior who speaks to His people each day.

Glorious. His heart is for His children to live in the power of His resurrection.  Indeed, the tomb is empty.

The Wait of John 19: 42 and 20:1

I often wonder what was going on in the minds of the followers of Jesus.  There aren't many details between John 19:42 and 20:1.  They laid Jesus in the tomb nearby and then Mary Magdalene came early while it was still dark and saw the stone rolled away.  Not only aren't there details about the mindset of Jesus' followers, there aren't any details about what was happening in heavenlies!

John 19:42
Therefore because of the Jewish day of preparation,
since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.

John 20:1
Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came early to the tomb,
while it was still dark, and saw the stone already taken away from the tomb.

I think God intended it that way. Sometimes, the narration stops, but God's work has not. That's true of things in life. I think the wait between John 19:42 and 20:1 is to help us to see life in light of God and how He is always at work. I need to trust Him when the narration stops.  I need to see life through eyes of faith and His promises. What He has promised, He will fulfill.  The empty tomb brings me back to that Truth.  And the wait is worth it!

The Simplicity of John 11:25

Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life;"

In Eugene Peterson's book, Living the Resurrection, The Risen Christ in Everyday Life, he writes, "The resurrection of Jesus creates and then makes available the reality in which we are formed as new creatures in Christ by the Holy Spirit."  On the back of the book, he had this sentence, which I totally agree with --
If you celebrate Christ's resurrection only one day of the year, you're missing something BIG.

He indeed is the Resurrection and the Life and because of Jesus I am made new -- every day and in every way.

Let's celebrate His resurrection EVERY DAY!

The Truth of John 20

The Resurrection just blows me away. Each time I read the accounts of the Resurrection, I try to imagine what the women and the disciples might have felt as they went to the tomb.  The dialogue and the details just captivate me. No one expected it. No one could have imagined it. No one understood what Jesus had said would happen.

John 20:9-10 For as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead. So the disciples went away again to their own homes.

The disciples went to the tomb, saw that the body was gone and then went home.  Mary stayed and talked with the angels and then saw Jesus!

John 20:18  Mary Magdalene came, announcing to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord," and that He had said these things to her.

How fast did Mary Magdalene run?  How loud was her voice when she announced the truth, "I have seen the Lord"?  How fast did she talk trying to repeat all that transpired?

And then for the disciples to see Jesus...

The Resurrection just amazes me. And I want to live each day with the truth of His resurrection shining forth in my life.  And like Mary, I want to daily say, I have seen the Lord!

Timothy R. Valentino had this to say in one of his sermons entitled, Running on Empty, John 20: 1-31

Running on Empty 2_t
Consider the figures mentioned in John 20, and how Jesus interacts with them—both before and after his resurrection:
JOHN is the portrait of an EASY-COMING faith. His personal struggle seems to be, “I need significance in my life.” And John discovers that the risen Christ gives his people a new identity and purpose.
PETER is the portrait of a GUILT-RIDDEN faith. His personal struggle seems to be, “I need forgiveness for my sins.” And Peter discovers that the risen Christ gives his people a new freedom and power.
MARY MAGDALENE is the portrait of a GRIEF-STRICKEN faith. Her personal struggle seems to be, “I need comfort for my despair.” And Mary discovers that the risen Christ gives his people a new intimacy and hope.
THOMAS is the portrait of a SHOW-ME faith. His personal struggle seems to be, “I need irrefutable evidence to believe.” And Thomas discovers that the risen Christ gives his people a new assurance and confidence.
Because of his humility, Jesus does not coerce faith, but because of his authority, he deserves it. The risen Christ still gives open-minded and tender-hearted people what they need to believe in him.
What is it that you still need to believe?

The Joy of John 13-17

During this time, I enjoy reading John 13-17 and the words are just so powerful.

Let me highlight a few verses from John 16 --

John 16:7-14
"But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. "And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment; concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me; and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer see Me; and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged. "I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. "But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. "He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you.

John 16:23-24
"In that day you will not question Me about anything. Truly, truly, I say to you, if you ask the Father for anything in My name, He will give it to you. Until now you have asked for nothing in My name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be made full.

John 16:33
"These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world."

Take the time to meditate on these chapters, especially before Resurrection Sunday!

The Beauty of Romans 5:1-6

Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God. And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance;  and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.

May these words speak to you as we consider the Truth of His death and RESURRECTION!

One More Tale

In my final tale, I mentioned the song that I loved from the two nights of worship. But I forgot to mention the song that those from the church loved. They had to sing this song as the final closing song. What song am I talking about?

Happy Day --
The greatest day in history
Death is beaten, You have rescued me
Sing it out, Jesus is alive.
The empty cross, the empty grave
Life eternal, You have won the day for me.
Shout it out, Jesus is alive, He's alive.
Oh Happy Day, Happy Day,
You've washed my sins away,
Oh Happy Day, Happy Day,
I'll never be the same,
Forever I am changed.
When I stand in that place,
Free at last, meeting face to face,
I am yours, Jesus, You are mine
Endless joy, perfect peace,
Earthly pain will finally cease,
Celebrate, Jesus is alive, He's alive.
Oh what a glorious day,
What a glorious way,
That You have saved me,
Oh what a glorious day,
What a glorious name.
Oh Happy Day, Happy Day,
You've washed my sins away,
Oh Happy Day, Happy Day,
I'll never be the same,
Forever I am changed.

And as it was Palm Sunday yesterday, I think it is an appropriate song to mention. Indeed, oh happy day when Jesus washed my sins away!  And one day, I will stand in that place, free at last, meeting face to face! Hallelujah!

My Final Fun Tale from the Philippines

I can't end without talking about the two awesome evening worships -- one in Banate and the other in Dumangas. The worship was led by Joe and Judy with brothers on the drums, the keyboard, the bass and the guitar.  I love the song Chasing You by Bethel Music.

Here are the lyrics --

I'm chasing you , I'm so in love
Captivated, I just can't get enough
I'll spend my days running after your heart, your heart, your heart oh woah woah woah woah

I'm chasing you, with all my life,
Captivated I just can't get enough
I'll spend my days running after your heart, your heart, your heart
oh woah woah woah woah

Heart, (you've won my heart)
you've won me heart and soul
(Heart and soul)
And where you lead I'll go
(I will go)
I wanna be where you are
(oh woah oh oh oh)

From the moment I rise
To the moment I sleep
My affection is for you
And even as I dream
I wanna know you
I'm after your heart

I'm chasing you ,I'm so in love
Captivated, I just can't get enough
I'll spend my days running after your heart, your heart, your heart oh woah woah woah woah

I'm chasing you, with all my life,
Captivated I just can't get enough
I'll spend my days running after your heart, your heart, your heart
oh woah woah woah woah

This life, this love
Was always meant to be
A wild crazy adventure
Discovering, the thrill, the rush
The more of you I see,
The more it leaves me wanting your everything
Your Everything

I'm chasing you ,I'm so in love
Captivated, I just can't get enough
I'll spend my days running after your heart, your heart, your heart oh woah woah woah woah

I'm chasing you, with all my life,
Captivated I just can't get enough
I'll spend my days running after your heart, your heart, your heart
oh woah woah woah woah

I'll spend my days running after your heart, your heart, your heart
oh woah woah woah woah

Heart, (you've won my heart)
you've won me heart and soul
(Heart and soul)
And where you lead I'll go
(I will go)
I wanna be where you are
(oh woah oh oh oh)

From the moment I rise
To the moment I sleep
My affection is for you
And even as I dream
I wanna know you
I'm after your heart

I'm chasing you ,I'm so in love
Captivated, I just can't get enough
I'll spend my days running after your heart, your heart, your heart oh woah woah woah woah

I'm chasing you, with all my life,
Captivated I just can't get enough
I'll spend my days running after your heart, your heart, your heart
oh woah woah woah woah

This life, this love
Was always meant to be
A wild crazy adventure
Discovering, the thrill, the rush
The more of you I see,
The more it leaves me wanting your everything
Your Everything

I'm chasing you ,I'm so in love
Captivated, I just can't get enough
I'll spend my days running after your heart, your heart, your heart oh woah woah woah woah

I'm chasing you, with all my life,
Captivated I just can't get enough
I'll spend my days running after your heart, your heart, your heart
oh woah woah woah woah

Fun Tales from Our Trip

I have to write about those on the team.

Even though I have never met most of the people, it was a fantastic week working and ministering together with these brothers and sisters in Christ.

One family came from Singapore and they had people in Manila make the T-shirts for us.  They also organized many of the needed things such as hotel or airport transport.

Lara was one of the main person in charge.  She had come six years ago because her "aunt" came from Dumangas and told her about the need.  Ever since that first trip, she has been committed to the people there. She led the music with great enthusiasm and she would also be the one you go to if you were ever feeling sick.  She was planning to be there with her whole family, but only two of her three sons were able to make it.

Another key person was Jon. We have known Jon for many years. He funded the cost for many things, such as the sound equipment, the uniforms, the gifts, the shipping of things and the list goes on. He also put together the basketball tournament.  It was great to be there with his family as we just love Judy and their kids. Only Aaron could not make it as he was in NYC for a choir invitational.

The team consisted of mostly families with kids ranging from a year to 18 year of age.  There were several single brothers and sisters in Christ and in particular were two brothers who had the same heart for intercession.

Serving together, eating together, being together 24/7 were truly a blessing for us.  My kids enjoyed playing with the younger kids and getting to know the older kids.  They enjoyed meeting and talking with all their new aunts and uncles. They want to go to Shanghai just to see everyone.

Here are a few pictures of the team doing various things --

Fun Tales from Our Week in the Philippines

My next tale has to be about the place -- Ilo Ilo. Actually, it's not just about Ilo Ilo, but we find that the Philippines has the most beautiful sunset no matter where we go.  We can just point the camera during sunset and whether we're on the bus or at the church or near a basketball court, the sunset always comes out magnificently.

Here are a few to prove my point -- (All pictures were taken by Abby!)

What a testimony to the beauty of God as Our Creator!

Fun Tales from Our Family Missions Trip

My third tale would be about the basketball outreach.

VBS finished by Wednesday lunch time.  Then it was time for the basketball tournament. Our first game was in Banate, a smaller town than Dumangas, about an hour north.  It is near the beach, so for that evening, we were to eat at a small beach resort with food catered from the family of a kid who attended VBS and has since graduated.

The game was set in the afternoon. I think they were younger, but we were taller.  The youth had their game and the adults played too.  The youth was only two quarters while the adult game was four quarters.  At first, we did not have the chemistry as a team, but the longer we played together, the better we got.

During half time, Jon had the free throw contest with prizes and people joined in the fun with enthusiasm.

After half time, many of the wives with younger kids headed out to the beach resort, but my kids and I stayed to cheer our team on.  It was just fun to be there.  And it was hot.  I went outside once and felt that the heat was even more intense than the day before.

The games were all very well attended, having really no publicity.  People just sat and watched.

Here are a few pictures --
